Notice how some of the roads are more or less parallel to the river. The oldest parts of of the city are within that triangle. Later, a more north/south grid was grafted on. Even later, the larger arterial roads and freeway were built.
The arterial roads do resemble arteries, moving around the lifeblood of the city.
